The streets of the city: a rising residence for youth
This feature story dives into a pervading issue: youth homelessness. My interview with Jason Dewes revealed his personal experience dealing with youth homelessness and enlightens readers on how it is a systemic issue concerning the foster care system itself. Additionally, my conversation with Doug Styles also allowed me to gauge how cities such as San Francisco are confronting this issue, which includes resources for those who are experiencing periods of housing insecurity. This piece was the product of my research and allowed me to be an advocate for those in community through journalism.

Deadly Halloween festivities in Seoul leave at least 153 dead
The night the Seoul Crowd Crush in Itaewon occurred, I remember updating the live reports from the NYT each second. At 11 p.m., I couldn't take the refreshing anymore, deciding I wanted to report the story for myself. I scoured for sources, through social media and anyone I possibly knew in Korea, and wrote a story covering the event through the perspectives of those who were there at the time. After multiple hour long video call interviews, I managed to finish the piece at 3 a.m. the same night to inform my local community of the international tragedy.
Experts anticipate a pricey Thanksgiving meal
The pandemic brought an incredibly fluctuating economy, and I was curious to see how these economic changes would impact the everyday American when it came to a holiday oriented around the food and the market. I wanted to bring my research and findings to the public's eye to inform them of what was to come.
Experts and the public react as space tourism blasts off
When I read the news about the newest expensive ride to space, I would curious what the public would think about this development. I also wanted to learn about the technology itself and learn about any positives and negatives of this new space travel opportunity. I turned to professors and other knowledgable people who could help answer my questions and help me put together an informative piece.
Leaving the nest causes tradition to slip away
As an Asian American, I wanted to tackle a topic I feel strongly passionate about: my culture. This article began because I was pondering about how drastically my connection to my culture would be altered once I got to college, and these sentimental feeling arose during Lunar New Year. I discussed this topic with other Asian Americans who informed me about their perspective when going to college.
Pumpkin-caused emissions spook the environment
With Halloween approaching, it was finally the season of pumpkin patches. I wanted to take a new angle on pumpkins and answer a question I have always had: where do these pumpkins go after these three months? I also wanted to know if pumpkins created any detrimental effects after seeing how high the the annual consumption rate was. I decided to investigate a bit more and while I found negative environmental effects, I also learned ways people could contribute.
Behind the money
Every year, our community has a music festival and a few members decided to collaborate on a story about it. For this package, I was in charge of the writing element and wrote about where the funding behind the festival comes from. After converting with the coordinators, I learned many about the event's funding, but also other fascinating tidbits of its history that I didn't know before. I've always attended this event but never truly knew about the inner workings until writing this article.
Editorials
Editorial: we need to implement digital literacy classes
In this digital age, young kids are having access to the internet earlier and earlier. These impressionable kids are absorbing a constant stream of fake information, susceptible to online scams, and can't differentiate between AI and authentic information. I urged schools to create digital literacy classes and implement education so kids will know how to properly navigate the web and learn internet safety.
Editorial: We need to stand in solidarity with writers
When the Writers Guild of America was on strike, I wanted to advocate readers to stand with the writers, articulating how important creativity and authenticity is when it comes to creating art. Our everyday consumption of entertainment and media could not happen without these writers. Their work is prevalent to all people who consume media and yet they were receiving unfair compensation despite this fact.
Editorial: We need to engage in local elections
Our local elections doesn't have as much engagement compared to national elections, yet local elections involve voting in people who are making decisions that still impact our everyday lives. I wanted to advocate for my community to engage in our local elections and use their democratic voice in order to insert their voice into our community.
COLUMN-SAN MATEO DAILY JOURNAL
As a high school intern at my county's newspaper, the San Mateo Daily Journal, one of my responsibilities is writing a monthly column for the weekend paper.
Confronting change
I have 2 names
This piece was a personal story about my perspective on growing up and departing from childhood. I narrate how I am currently navigating through my fears of it. I also discuss my new perspective which I have accumulated through my introspection on this inevitable part of life that we all experience.
I wanted to write about an experience many Asian Americans go through: their journey of accepting their culture and their community. I wrote about my personal experience with accepting my identity when I began straying away from the ideas of assimilation amongst others in my community and instead learning to wear my culture with pride.
The magic of cinnamon rolls
I wrote this piece about my sentimental connection to cinnamon rolls. I discuss how cinnamon rolls are no longer just a food to me, they're an invisible string connecting me to my family and cherished memories we have spent together. I wanted to share my special sentiments towards cinnamon rolls and express my gratitude towards my family.
Combating food insecurity with a community tradition
I was to report on the local food drive in our community every year, and I decided to take the angle of the importance of community engagement in relation to the food drive. The Silicon Valley has copious amounts of hidden food insecurity and I wanted to bring these facts to light, and also illustrate how much of an impact community engagement can be, especially for teens.
Growing up with a Sibling
Growing up with a sibling is such a special experience, and I know many people can relate. I wanted to write about how much I valued having this relationship and encapsulate my view towards it. I didn't truly this sibling relationship but it has increased exponentially once I realized my sibling and I were both growing up. This was a sentimental piece to write as I recounted my experiences as I grew up.
DAILY CAL
I was a summer intern at the Daily Cal, UC Berkeley's college newspaper for two summers, 2022 and 2023. I was on the blog team and wrote pieces focusing on travel, lifestyle, and trends. I wrote two pieces every week for two summers so while I can't showcase them all, here are my favorites.
I traveled quite a bit over the past two summers and wrote about each destination. Here are my most favorite pieces among those travels.
Travel
Itinerary for a perfect day in Cape Cod
I wrote about my favorite spots around Cape Cod, a popular travel destination in the summer located in New England. These spots were recommended to me by a local I met while in Boston and I wanted to share.
What to know before coming to Crete
I wrote about things people should prepare for before coming to Crete, Greece. It was a beautiful destination but the fact that it wasn't a city and rather a spaced out island came with some difficulties; I wanted to give tips for future travelers.
A perfect day in LA
Everyone knows the basic things to do in LA: Hollywood sign, amusement parks, and more. However, I really wanted to emphasize some fun activities to do as a tourist that reach beyond the typical list.
Eating Berkeley (recipes)
'Gilmore Girls' recipe: Luke's pumpkin pancakes
'Gilmore Girls' is one of my favorite shows, and I wanted to share a recipe inspired by the TV show. I enjoy how the show constantly places you within the autumn, and thus created a recipe inspired by these feelings of comfort.
Gourmet toast combinations
My experimental toasts I create are truly a simple pleasure in life, and I wanted to share my different combinations I have tried through an article. I enjoy innovating unique flavors by mixing different ingredients and that created incredible results.
Around the Bay Area
I am a proud milk consumer
This was a lighthearted, funny piece that resembles a column about food. I wrote a defense for drinking cow milk, a slightly controversial opinion I will stand by. I wanted to let my inner voice guide this piece; the language of the piece is authentic to my thoughts.
Recommendations for used bookstores in Berkeley
Shopping for books secondhand is environmentally friendly, and you can also support small local businesses. They're harder to spot versus a Barnes and Nobles so I wanted to share a some used bookstores around Berkeley for students to shop at.
Quick trips to take this summer
As a Bay Area local, I wanted to share some convenient destinations near the bay that people can drive up to for a quick getaway.
My favorite pancake spots in the Bay
I absolutely love pancakes and have tried countless brunch places in search for a delicious platter. I wanted to share my favorite spots to grab them around the Bay Area for those who share my similar sentiment for pancakes.
