Law and Ethics

Journalism as a whole is the key to democracy and it's the root of our society in general. In order to utilize that tool and hone my skills as a journalist, it's important to me to cover delicate subjects with care. I strive to maintain journalistic integrity with every story that I cover and edit in order to protect our publication.

Covering a tragedy

Editing Breaking News

As a Scot Scoop editor, I have edited breaking news pieces that have included victims from within our community. With sensitive issues, it's crucial to pay respect to the victims of the incident and I helped fact check and saw that it was covered with respect.

The Seoul Crowd Crush was truly an unimaginable tragedy. As I spoke to sources who knew people who were missing from the incident or who were in close proximity to the event, I learned about how to apply sensitivity to delicate subjects.

I didn't want to sensationalize the story. Rather, I made sure to have a conversation with my sources about how they were doing and what they personal experience was. This allowed me to handle the interview with a sensitive hand and I was able to cover the story with respect.

Anonymous sourcing

As a Scot Scoop editor, I had to familiarize myself with the Scot Scoop handbook which details our anonymous sourcing policy and more. I make sure to edit according to our handbook and play close attention to ethical sourcing and libel to protect the reputation of our publication.
